Dunedin Waterfront Vision
Dunedin is renowned for its spectacular natural setting, rich architectural heritage, and internationally significant wildlife. Established as a thriving trading port, the city’s relationship with its harbour has shaped its identity for generations. Today, however, much of the waterfront remains disconnected from the people it serves.
The Dunedin Waterfront Vision reimagines this vital edge between city and harbour, creating stronger connections between the urban centre, the water, and the surrounding landscape. Inspired by Dunedin’s history, culture, and natural environment, the masterplan transforms underutilised waterfront land into a vibrant destination for residents, visitors, and future generations.
Designed to honour the past while embracing innovation, the proposal integrates world-class architecture, public spaces, cultural experiences, and ecological restoration. The result is a dynamic waterfront precinct that celebrates Dunedin’s unique character, enhances public access to the harbour, and establishes a sustainable framework for long-term growth.
By reconnecting the city with its waterfront, the vision creates new opportunities for recreation, tourism, business, and community engagement, strengthening Dunedin’s position as one of New Zealand’s most distinctive coastal cities.
